World's Northernmost Settlement & Polar Night { 21 images } Created 22 Mar 2017

In the distant northern polar region, midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, a remote archipelago called Svalbard sinks into the Polar Night from November to February. For several months, the Sun stays well below the horizon and Svalbard turns into an eerie, mesmerizing arctic winter wonderland where Northern Lights can be seen even be in the daytime hours!

On Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, the settlement of Longyearbyen is one of the world's northernmost. With only 2000 inhabitants and very little light pollution, Longyearbyen is a perfect starting point for exploring Svalbard's Mars-like landscapes, by snowmobile, dog sleds, snowcat or on snowshoes.
